About the Club
The foundations of Scone Thistle FC (nicknamed “The Jaggie Nettles”) stretch back to the year 1882, boasting a proud heritage of teams, coaches and players, including the well renowned legend that is George Best. ‘Georgie’ played one game for Scone Thistle Juniors in 1982, during a career stint that would see him make a number of guest appearances in a variety of friendlies and testimonials.Undoubtedly the most famous figure to make an appearance for the club, George Best, was not the only established player to pull on the black and red. Other former players / coaches to note include:
Jimmy Guthrie – Dundee and Portsmouth. Captain of Portsmouth when they won the 1939 FA Cup Final and Chairman of the Players’ Union 1946–1957.
Frank Christie – Former Liverpool FC player, East Fife player and manager and St Johnstone FC coach. Coached the club in the late 1980s. Frank scored the winning goal in the 1953-54 Scottish League Cup Final for East Fife against Partick Thistle.
Philip Scott – former St. Johnstone and Sheffield Wednesday midfielder.
That proud heritage of over 140 years makes Scone Thistle FC one of the oldest clubs in Perthshire but with a proud history comes a great future. Today, Scone Thistle Community Club is an umbrella body that harnesses together the aspirations and talent of no less than 17 member teams, represented in age groups spanning the youngest at the 6 year olds’ Soccer School to the adults playing for the Juniors.
Thriving each season, the club has 250 registered players both male and female, over 40 members who manage, train and coach the teams and a number of volunteers who give up their time to support the club and its wider needs.
This structure offers a clear, grass roots player pathway to The Juniors and beyond and is the framework that has allowed club achievement and accreditation of Quality Mark ‘Community’ status. This is SFA recognition of the fact that Scone Thistle Community Club is professionally focused, qualified and governed appropriately at every level, from coaching and first aid to Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) and Child Protection. This is an advanced and solid platform from which to progress, towards the next and highest accolade of Quality Mark ‘Legacy’ status, which is one of the club’s goals.
Our teams play their home matches at Farquharson Park RDM, Scone Village Park and The Glebe. In order for the club to continue this phenomenal rate of growth, fulfil its Legacy ambitions and realise the potential that truly exists within Scone, it is now critical to develop and widen the facilities footprint which now threatens to constrain the strategic development and presence of the club in Scone.
It is what we are and our goals and ambitions that drive our club motto... 'More than a club'
